Program Note
Bramwell Coles' "Here at the Cross," written in 1947 for the Easter season, now contributes to moments of consecration throughout the year. This arrangement highlights Coles' words, "Lord, for thy service, fit me, I plead," with other musical references to the cross and service.
Note to the Conductor
The music should move quickly enough to allow young players to understand measures as well as notes, and phrases as well as measures, but the tempo should still be patient enough to let the music breathe. The frequent use of ritenuto (a momentary holding back of the tempo) allows crescendos to open and phrases to rest naturally.
