Comments by Lieut-Colonel Ray Steadman Allen
Introduction ᄀᆰ The introduction is a short one, two bars only, and is on normal lines.
Section A ᄀᆰ Flugel, upper horns and 1st baritone are prominent in the first bar. The quotation is Lift up the Army banner; however, the music does not adhere to this tune, but is developed entirely originally. A move to the key of A major in the fourth bar will require alertness in the matter of accidentals. In general ᄀᆰ and this applies to all sections ᄀᆰ careful attention to dynamics and accents is essential.
Section B ᄀᆰ The special feature of this section lies in the contrast between legato melody of baritones and euphonium and its staccato duplication by 2nd cornet and trombones when the section is repeated.
Section C ᄀᆰ Db major is not a key very frequently encountered in brass band work; it is not anticipated that too much trouble will arise, as the parts are not unduly complicated. The 'pyramid' feature in the third, seventh and eleventh bars may require separate rehearsal in order to achieve the necessary clarity and neatness. In this section the bass trombone is used as a third trombone to complete the offbeat chords. The trombones should avoid a hard 'crack' in their work; a strict observance of the dynamic will go a long way toward obviating this unpleasant effect.
Section D ᄀᆰ In delightful contrast to the smooth flow of the preceding section, this final portion of the trio is strongly defined and sparkling. It will be noted that the tenor trombones are allied to the upper cornets, flugel and solo horn; slurred trombone quavers are obviously not to be given glissando treatment. All other parts are trouble free, but the last three bars may need just that little extra rehearsal to secure clarity and precision.
