Vernon Post
Soldiers of the Cross was?first published in 1948 as part of the original yellow book Band music for Evangelism now known as the American Band Journal. This prize-winning march is fresh and deserves a new look and listen by today's musicians. There is nothing too difficult here. Close attention to detail in articulation and dynamics will lead to a successful performance. Avoid the tendency to play too quickly. A steady tempo is your friend.
Vernon Post
Vernon Post is an important figure in the history of Salvation Army music in the Eastern Territory USA. He was one of the original Star Lake campers and he studied cornet with the famous Dr. Frank Simon at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. As a Salvation Army officer, he was appointed to the Salvation Army music department where he served with Richard Holz and continued composing and arranging studies with Erik Leidzen. He was principal cornet and deputy bandmaster of the New York Staff Band from 1954 to 1963 and bandmaster from 1963 to 1972. During these years he was the conductor of the much-heralded Male Chorus. He influenced a generation of young people as program director and camp director at Star Lake Musicamp. His artistic and intellectual abilities aided him in mentoring many young leaders. His influence continues as the patriarch of Montclair Citadel, one of the Salvation Army's well known musical corps. ~ Ronald Waiksnoris
