The hymn tune "Richmond" was written by Thomas Haweis (1734-1820), a cleric in the Church of England. As a common meter tune, it has been associated with many sets of words, including such well-known hymns as "In Christ There Is No East or West," "Joy to the World," and "Jesus! The Name High Over All."Audio Sample
In this setting, two verses of Charles Wesley's (1707-1788) hymn, "O, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing," were the inspiration:
- O, for a thousand tongues to sing
- My great Redeemer's praise,
- The glories of my God and King,
- The triumphs of his grace!
- He breaks the power of cancelled sin,
- He sets the prisoner free;
- His blood can make the foulest clean;
- His blood availed for me.
