Program Note
This cheerful solo is based on the late 19th century gospel song, "I Feel Like Singing All the Time" with music by George Stebbins (1846-1945) and text by Edward Hammond (1831-1910). The first verse establishes the mood of this happy theme:Note to the Conductor
- I feel like singing all the time,
- My tears are wiped away,
- For Jesus is a friend of mine,
- I'll serve Him every day.
It is a bit unusual for a solo to begin without accompaniment; therefore, it is imperative that the soloist begin boldly, with confidence. As with all accompaniments, care must be given to balance the ensemble to provide an accompaniment that supports rather than competes with the soloist. In the closing two bars, allow the soloist the freedom to climb the final scale out of tempo, as in a cadenza.
