Frederick Whitfield (1829-1904) was born at Threapwood, Shropshire, UK and educated at Trinity College, Dublin.
His prodigious output of songs and hymns is listed at over thirty, and his beautiful hymn (he did not write the chorus which is often coupled with this hymn) “There Is A Name I Love To Hear” (Tune “The Savior’s Name”) was written around 1850.
The setting presented here is in a relaxed Latin feel and captures the joy and energy of his meaningful text:
