Holiness... What does it look like? Well, biblically the holiness of God is a scary thing. It knocks the saints onto their faces, screaming in worship. Flaming archangels, whose heavenly glory would blind us, fall down before it. It rocks the heavens with thunder and fire, occasionally touching the earth in moments of divine peace.
This picture can seem a million miles away from what we sometimes think holiness is, which is usually just behaving ourselves. The glory of God's throne can seem distant from our faith and the rest of the world. In the western world, weak Christianity, greed and aggressive paganism leave us with broken homes and lonely neighborhoods. Faith is despised, or even worse, respectable, and the rich live in distant helplessness to a world where wealth and poverty can sit either side of a border. This is a polluted creation, groaning under the pain of starving kids, ugly wars and sexual slavery. This world couldn't do with a little holiness; it could do with a lot!
