"Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow...and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:9-11 NIV)
The simple chorus He is Lord, used by church congregations around the world, endures because of its musical simplicity and theological centrality to the Christian faith. The composer has deliberately chosen to unite it with words from Robert Lowry's hymn Up From the Grave He Arose, making this setting particularly suitable for Easter celebrations.
From the opening strains of "Low in the gave he lay," the music quickly flows into a worshipful presentation of the main theme, "He is Lord." Sections of the lower brass then bring us back to Lowry's hymn with the line "Up from the grave he arose." Immediately following is an elevated reference to the last line of verse three - "He tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord," leading to a second, more confident proclamation of the main theme and a final, exultant conclusion.
